Compost is<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">e can be added to the soil to help plants grow as it is rich in nutrients. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">necessary for its growth. Waste from\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Food and yard waste make up 30% of the waste that is thrown away and can be eliminated from landfills if composted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Importance of compost<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Keeps vegetative material out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. It avoids the need to add artificial fertilizers to crops, and because they are rich in nutrients, they absorb more of the greenhouse gas methane.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">s water which avoids having to use so much water to maintain crops.<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Basic materials to create a compost:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\"><strong>Greens: <\/strong>grass clippings, vegetable waste, fruit waste and coffee grounds.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\"><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\"><strong>Brown: <\/strong>leaves, branches and dead vegetative material.<br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\"><strong style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">Water: <\/strong>to moisten the material and aid in the decomposition of organic matter.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">The compost should have an equal amount of greens and browns. Layers of organic material of different sizes should be alternated. The browns provide carbon for the compost, the greens provide nitrogen and the water provides moisture to help break down the organic matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><strong>What can be composted?<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7546 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/raicespr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Hands_with_composte-300x179.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"179\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Fruits and Vegetables<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Eggshells<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Eraser and coffee filters<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Tea bags<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Nut shells<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Newspaper in strips<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Cardboard<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Paper<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Lawn mowing waste<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">House plants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Hay and straw<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Sheets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Sawdust<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Pieces of wood<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Wool and cotton rags<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Human and animal hair<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><strong>What not to compost and why?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\"><strong>Coal and coal ash<\/strong> &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">May contain substances harmful to plants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\"><strong>Plants with insects or diseases<\/strong> &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">Diseases and insects can survive and be transferred to other plants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\"><strong>Pet waste (e.g., dog and cat feces, used cat litter)<\/strong> &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">They may contain parasites, bacteria, germs, pathogens and viruses harmful to humans.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\"><strong>Lawn mowing treated with chemical pesticides<\/strong> &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">They can kill organisms beneficial to compost.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\"><strong>Fats, oils, dairy products (e.g., butter, milk, yogurt)<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 19px;\">They create an odor problem and attract pests such as rodents and flies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Benefits of composting<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 19px;
