There are many ways to make compost at home, these are just some general suggestions.
Backyard composting
- Select a shady spot near a water source to make your compost.
- Add green and brown material as it is collected, ensuring that large pieces are cut or shredded.
- Wet the pre-composted material as it is added.
- When the pre-compost pile is established, add grass clippings and green material. Fruits and vegetables that continue to be added should be buried under 10 inches of composted material to avoid attracting insects and pests.
- Optional: Cover the pre-compost with a tent to keep it moist. When the material on the bottom is dark the organic material has turned into compost and is ready to use. This can take anywhere from two months to two years depending on soil conditions, climate and the amount of material added.
- It is important to mix and stir the compost with a little water to help maintain the compost.
Internal Composting
If you don't have space to compost in the yard, you can create compost indoors using a special bucket that can be purchased at the hardware store, garden store or you can make it yourself. Remember to be mindful of what you put in the bucket. A well-managed compost bin does not attract pests or rodents and does not smell bad. The compost should be ready in two to five weeks.
